|Description:||Comunilife’s unique Life is Precious after school program prevents suicide in young Latinas – the teen population with the highest rate of suicide attempt in the country The Life is Precious (LIP) music program aims to use music as a therapeutic wellness tool and a means to foster social and personal transformation. The music program embraces the values and principles of Venezuela’s El Sistema, and aims to provide a caring, nurturing and motivating environment to foster the success of each participant. Students’ musical experiences are centered in a caring, cooperative and fun learning environment, which foster the values of family and community. Character building and strengthening participants self-esteem is an integral part of the teaching and learning process. The music curriculum includes basic musicianship concepts, rhythmic skills and large/small choral and instrumental teaching and ensemble work. Performances serve to showcase student progress and provide a wonderful space for family and community pride. |
|Duties:||The ideal candidate must: |
• Have a strong vocation for service and the sensibility to work with the profile of participants in alignment with the values and ideals of the LIP program.
• Show a strong commitment to the musical, psychological and social mission of the program
• Passion for music education and working in socioeconomically deprived areas.
• The person must have the ability and sensibility to work with a variety of educational and psychological conditions within the learning environment.
• Embrace and support the El Sistema philosophy and methodology.
• Excellent interpersonal skills to team work with participants, music coordinator, peer teachers, administrators, and parents
• Facilitate community and family relations and involvement.
• Appropriately and positively challenge the individual student and the group as a whole
• Team teaching is required in each center and also between the three LIP centers where the program runs concurrently. The teaching team will ensure the highest quality beginning instrumental experience for students, select repertoire and teaching materials, and support each participant holistically.
• Group teaching experience is required
• Enforce program rules and policies and encourage appropriate behavior
• Monitor the progress of students through in-class observations and periodic evaluations
• Ability to work under frequent observation
• Experience working with students from diverse ethnic, economic and cultural backgrounds
• Undergraduate degree in Music Education, Master’s degree preferred with strong knowledge of string repertoire, curriculum, and pedagogy.
• Advanced level proficiency in a string instrument.
• Experience teaching instruments in group settings
• Strong knowledge of music pedagogy and instrumental music methods (i.e. Suzuki, Kodaly, Orff, Gordon, Dalcroze, etc.)
• Experience in community music teaching, a plus.
• Spanish language skills, a plus, though not required
Teachers are expected to work 20 hours per week over 3 days during after school hours and Saturdays.
